Winner of the 2023 Sankalp Africa Awards, Legendary Foods is redefining what is possible to bring affordable, sustainable, nutrient-dense protein source at scale to households. The company is on a mission to deliver the nutrition of meat at the price point and sustainability of plants by farming palm larva (known locally as akokono in Twi, Ghana’s most widely spoken language). This traditional, widely consumed food is now being scaled with biotechnology that transforms agricultural by-products into safe, consistent, and affordable nutrition for families across the region.
Wingi is a tech-enabled platform helping African SMEs manage cross-border sourcing and embedded supply-chain finance across multiple African markets and is piloting invoice-data–driven embedded trade finance. 91% of Wingi’s clients are female small businesses owners. The platform offers women entrepreneurs simple, reliable, vetted sourcing, streamlined logistics, and supply chain financing that understands their unique financing challenges – all while helping them to expand into new markets.
MeCash was the first African fintech in the competitive African mobile payments space operating on blockchain rails. It uses stablecoins to on-and-off-ramp payments, and offers a comprehensive services package addressing all the financial challenges SMEs need to overcome in order to grow. Through innovative programs, award-winning public campaigns, and lasting policy gains, it advances change across 5 key pillars: Preventing Violence Against Women and Children, Creating Positive Pathways for Men and Boys, Improving Quality Health Access at Every Age, Expanding Economic Opportunity, and Building the Next Generation of Courageous Leaders.
SAGE is building out its female expert community by identifying and vetting top experts across 5–10 countries to start, creating a peer-nominated network, convening female experts around cross-cutting comparative themes, and amplifying the voices of women experts so that their expertise reaches those who shape policy and public understanding. This work will help ensure the structure and narratives formed by those accessing the SAGE community will include the voices of women and female leaders.
